Understanding Type 1 Diabetes and Your Risk
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks and destroys its own insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Without these cells, the body cannot produce insulin, a hormone essential for regulating blood sugar levels. This type of diabetes often appears during childhood or adolescence but can develop at any age.
If you have a family member with type 1 diabetes, your risk of developing the condition increases—sometimes up to 15 times higher than someone with no family history. There are three stages of type 1 diabetes, and symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss may not appear until later stages.
